Some artists are famous - such as the current favourite Banksy - and some are not so famous. Does that make the less famous artist somehow less talented? Absolutely not. I want to discuss here one such little-know artist because I love his work.
Arcimboldo is a little-known Italian artist from the sixteenth century. He lived in Milan and Vienna and produced some of the most influential allegorical paintings in the history of mankind. For the first time ever in the United States, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC has put together an outstanding exhibition of some of the best work that Arcimboldo has produced over the centuries for the Italian and Austrian rulers of his time. The exhibit also includes some works of Leonardo da Vinci and some old books and drawings from the same time. This is a first class exhibition, that has influenced painters and artists all over the world.
